This
spacious, comfortable house, situated in Ancient Eleftherna, inland from
Rethymnon, enjoys a high position on the edge of this quaint village.
Originally an old village house it has been lovingly renovated and
restored by its owners, Katerina and Vangelis, successfully combining
tradition with modern, to provide tasteful character accommodation. A narrow lane next to the house leads to the village square and one of two tavernas that can be reached on foot in a couple of minutes. Supplies and a further choice of tavernas can be found just ten minutes away by car at Margarites, a village of potters who still use traditional techniques to produce large functional pots and exquisite ceramics. |
The
closest beach is twenty minutes’ away by car, next to the pretty coastal
village of Panormo, as is the bustling town of Rethymnon, with its
meandering, picturesque streets steeped in history, its ancient Venetian
harbour, huge choice of shops, wide selection of tavernas, and long sandy
beach.
Almost directly on your doorstep are the extensive ruins of Ancient Eleftherna where ongoing excavations have revealed the extent of a Dorian city that thrived in the 8th & 7th centuries BC. A short distance away, the fortress-like Monastery of Arkadi, built during the last Venetian period, has an intriguing and tragic history that offers an insight into the fierce struggle the island has fought against numerous invaders. |
The
Melidoni Cave, one of many impressive caves on the island, with massive
stalactites and stalagmites, is also easily reached from Eleftherna. Whether you enjoy history, culture, the coast or the countryside there’s no shortage of wonderful places to visit from Villa Katerina, that’s if you can tear yourself away from this lovely house and its tranquil gardens and the friendly locals of this ancient village! Villa Katerina has a double and a twin bedroom, a bathroom with bath and shower attachment, a fully fitted kitchen and a spacious living area that includes historical artefacts of Katerina’s family. The large gardens are beautifully kept by Katerina’s father who still lives in the village. He also takes care of the lovely pool, which you are sure to find a welcome sight after wandering the many attractions of the region. |
